Question: Can we incorporate longer term bets?

A couple of people have asked about the possibility of having long term or antepost bets and I want to see what the general feeling is about this.

When we set up the betting club the idea was that looking out for the other guys' bets come in (or not as was usually the case) livened up an otherwise dull Saturday watching Jeff Stelling, and the results gave us immediate gratification. We had a finite week where we had control of the total pot, knew how much of it we had to spend and knew everyone else was watching what we were doing with the pot. After the week we looked at the site to see how much had been won/lost, where that put the bettor in the table and how much the next guy had to spend.

We briefly thought about long-term bets when we started the club a year ago but decided that they would be too difficult to incorporate. They would tie up money for too long and take away from the immediate gratification of seeing the other bloke's bet win or lose. It would also mean that the clear cut start and end of a player's betting week would be blurred, and potentially be more difficult for admin purposes to calculate and keep track of, for individual league tables etc

I am not against the idea in principle however and if people are really keen on it we probably do have an opportunity to go for it this year. We could use the monthly top-ups for this purpose. Maybe on 1st September we could all place £10 worth of long term bets with the first top-up?

Please comment and we can come to some sort of democratice agreement.

Good work on the update Tim.

I'm not completely against the idea of long term betting and or anti post but I feel it is kind of going away from the way we set this thing up. We originally planned to just bet over the weekend so it gave us a little something extra to keep an eye on. We knew each week how much money was in the pot and how much we stood to win or lose come Sunday evening.

Now, I have no problems if the majority want to change things. However I think we need to leave it till September as Tim is on holiday shortly. I think Tim should show off his IT skills by putting together some kind of poll on his new site so we can decide.......

I think the idea is more medium rather than long term. For example the olympics. The individual could place their bet and then as far as the pot goes the stake has gone. If a return then comes of that bet (possibly at inflated odds) then I see that as a bonus. I don't think we should go to longer (season length) bets though!

I agree with Tony, nobodies suggesting we have long term bets such as Tranmere to win the league (because that would be insane) more like bets on special events that will last longer than a couple of days (eg. Olympics, Wimbledon, Euro 2008).
