Tim's bets for this week

It's the Hennessey Gold Cup at Newbury on Saturday (2.40). Its one of my favourite races and last year I'd backed State of Play at 12s and 10s antepost, then 7s on the day. When the price had drifted back out to 12s with 5 minutes to go before the race I was worried, but decided I had to have another tenner on. It absolutely romped home winning me the best part of £500. This year the class horse in the race is Denman, Kauto Star's stablemate; he loves a fight and he can jump. He's going to have to carry a massive 11st 12lbs, and has some serious rivals in the likes of Snowy Morning (who I've backed antepost for the Gold Cup at 95), Character Building, Dream Alliance and Abregante, who is carrying about 20lbs less. However, £10 says Denman will just have enough to win.

£12 says Cahill will be the difference for Everton, who can win the battle for 5th best team in the country against Pompey. Lastly, a hugely speculative £11.50 for Newcastle to win at Blackburn.

DENMAN to win Hennessey Gold Cup £10 @ 4.9
Portsmouth v EVERTON £12 @ 3.45
Blackburn v NEWCASTLE £11.50 @ 4.7
